This paper presents an overview of the application of and risks of exposure to ultrasound (USG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pregnancy. The data available to date suggest that diagnostic USG and MRI in pregnancy have no adverse effect on embryogenesis or fetal growth. However, although B and M mode are safe, Doppler USG should be performed with caution during the first trimester. In MRI, as USG, much of data available regarding the safety during pregnancy is quite confusing and outright contradictory. Nevertheless, while it is true that the answers are not all in yet, it seems reasonable to permit MR imaging of pregnant patients when the diagnostic need sufficiently warrants such an intervention.
