자궁내막은 사춘기 이전부터 초경을 거쳐서 폐경이 된 후까지 그 시기에 보여주는 정상 자궁내막 소견이 다양하며, 또한 자궁내막에는 다양한 질환들이 발생할 수 있으며 각기 다른 소견을 나타낸다.
자궁내막 상태나 질환을 평가할 때 가장 먼저 시행되는 영상검사가 질 초음파검사이다. 그러므로 정확한 진단을 하기 위해서는 정상 자궁내막에서의 변화에 대한 초음파 소견 그리고 질환의 초음파 소견을 알고 있는 것이 중요하다. 자궁내막을 이해하기 위해서는 자궁내막의 변화와 관련된 요인들, 즉 환자의 나이, 생리 주기, 임신 여부뿐만 아니라 호르몬 치료의 병력 등을 잘 파악하는 것도 필요하다.

The endometrium demonstrates a wide spectrum of normal and pathologic appearances throughout menarche as well as during the prepubertal and postmenopausal years. Transvaginal ultrasound examination is almost always the first modality used in imaging work-up of endometrial status or disease. It is important to be aware of the normal changes of endomtrial appearances at sonography to accurately detect and diagnose pathologic conditions. It is necessary to understand that the appearance of the endometrium is related to multiple factors, including the patient’s age, stage in the menstrual cycle, and pregnancy status and whether she has undergone hormonal replacement therapy.
